The Drone Threat Is No Longer Theoretical
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAS), commonly known as drones, have rapidly evolved from a developing technology into an increasingly important part of civilian, commercial, military and national security operations.
Drones can provide tremendous benefits. They can deliver medicine to remote communities, assist with rescue operations, support conservation efforts, provide aerial photography and participate in recreational activities. Technology itself is neutral. It can be used for beneficial purposes—or it can be misused to cause harm.
The potential security implications of increasingly capable and accessible drone technology deserve serious consideration.
In 2015, the authors warned that the United States would need to anticipate how drones could be misused by individuals or organizations seeking to cause disruption or conduct attacks. That concern is particularly significant for critical infrastructure and the Florida Space Coast, home to NASA and Cape Canaveral.
